Can My Windshield Be Repaired or Does It Need to Be Replaced?

If you've ever walked out to your car and found a chip or crack in your windshield, you know the sinking feeling that follows. Is this a quick fix or an expensive replacement?

The good news is that not every chip or crack means a full windshield replacement, but knowing the difference matters.

At Moreno Auto Glass, we get this question every single day. Here's exactly how we think about it.

The Size Rule

Size is the first thing we look at. As a general guideline:

• Chips smaller than a quarter can typically be repaired

• Cracks shorter than six inches may be repairable depending on location

• Cracks longer than six inches almost always require a full windshield replacement

That said, size alone doesn't tell the whole story.

As a general guideline a chip smaller than a quarter is typically a good candidate for repair. Once damage crosses into crack territory, even a crack that might technically be "repairable" the conversation changes.

Here at Moreno Auto Glass we are honest with our customers about longer cracks: we generally do not recommend repairing them, and here's why.

First, longer cracks can compromise the structural integrity of the windshield even after repair. The resin fills the crack but it does not restore the glass to its original strength the way a smaller chip repair does.

Second, longer cracks leave larger scars. As we explained earlier, chip repair is preventative not cosmetic, but the longer the crack, the more visible that scar will be after the repair is complete.

Third, and this is something many customers don't realize, a crack repair is not the same as a chip repair in the eyes of your insurance company. Chip repairs are often covered at zero cost under comprehensive glass coverage. Crack repairs are treated differently by many insurers and may not be covered the same way, or at all. In some cases a full windshield replacement is actually the better financial decision once you factor in what your policy covers.

Location, Location, Location

Where the damage is on your windshield matters just as much as how big it is:

Driver's line of sight - any chip or crack directly in front of the driver is a safety concern. Even a successfully repaired chip in this area can leave slight distortion that affects visibility. In most cases we recommend replacement for damage in this zone.

Near the ADAS camera - if your vehicle has lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control, your car has an ADAS camera mounted at the top center of your windshield behind the rearview mirror. Any damage near this camera cannot be repaired. The resin used in chip repair can interfere with the camera's ability to read the road accurately. Damage in this zone requires a full windshield replacement, followed by a camera recalibration to ensure your safety systems are working correctly.

Near the edges - cracks that start at or travel toward the edge of the windshield are structurally compromising. The edges of your windshield are what hold the glass in place during a collision or rollover. Edge damage almost always means replacement.

Away from edges, camera and line of sight - this is the sweet spot for repair. A chip or crack in the middle or passenger side of the windshield, away from the edges, is usually a great candidate for repair.

The Arizona Heat Factor

Living in the East Valley means your windshield faces conditions most of the country never deals with. Arizona summer temperatures can push interior car temperatures above 150 degrees - and that heat causes glass to expand and contract repeatedly.

What does that mean for your chip? A chip that could be repaired today can spread into an unrepairable crack within days - sometimes hours - in Arizona's heat. If you notice new damage, don't wait. The sooner you address it the more likely repair is an option and the less likely you are to need a costly full replacement.

How Chip Repair Works

When a chip can be repaired, the process is fast and effective. We inject a special resin into the damaged area, which bonds to the glass and restores structural integrity - stopping the damage from spreading further.

It's important to set the right expectations here. Chip repair is a preventative service, not a cosmetic one. The resin will improve the appearance of the damage and in some cases the repair is barely noticeable, but chips can leave what we call a "scar" on the glass that remains visible after the repair is complete. What the repair does is stop that scar from becoming a crack that spreads across your entire windshield and forces a costly full replacement.

Think of it like stitches on a cut - the goal is to heal and prevent further damage, not to make it look like it never happened.

Does Insurance Cover It?

In Arizona, most comprehensive insurance policies cover windshield chip repair at zero cost to you. No deductible, no out-of-pocket expense. Many people don't realize this and put off a repair that would have cost them nothing.
